Looking for Greener Pasture?

But are you ready for it?

The dictionary defines greener pasture as a new, better and more interesting place, job opportunity or activity.

Most people are on the lookout for a greener pasture and are always dreaming of how good life will be when we finally land at the greener pastures.

But in the quest for greener pastures have you asked yourself: “who tends and waters the greener pastures to make it look green and appealing to you?

Well, a Swahili proverb answers this question, when it says, “When you see vessels afloat, know someone made them”, “ukiona vyaelea jua vimeundwa”. The green pasture you desire is being watered and cared for by someone and hence they jealously vet those who want to come into their pastureland.

Whether it’s a job opportunity or business opportunity or just a leisure activity that is interesting and exciting to you, to gain access to the greener pasture requires that you prepare yourself and be ready to meet the stringent requirements required to get it.

Roman philosopher Seneca said, “Luck is when preparation meets opportunity”. The truth is opportunities don’t just fall on our laps, opportunities favours the ready and it seems “lady luck”, knock at the doors of those who ready for opportunities.

Tips for personal readiness for greener pastures.

1.          Make learning a habit

Learning is the ongoing process of imparting knowledge, values, skills and attitude which will benefit an individual. Learning is not only about what happens in a formal school setup, but the continuous need to learn new skills and new ideas to improve current skills. Learn and acquire skills and capabilities that will be required at the greener side you desire to be.

2.         Networking

Networking is the exchange of information and ideas among people with   common   profession or special interest.

Networking is about exchange   and so in a networking relationship ensure that you are giving value to others even as you receive value from them.

3.Determine your personal value proposition.

In the marketing world, a value proposition is a summary of why a consumer should buy a company’s product.

In your greener pasture’s quest, a value proposition is a promise of value you will give a potential employer or potential client should   they grant you access to their greener pasture.

If your intention is just how you will benefit from the greener pastures, you are very unlikely to get through into the greener pasture or even if you get in your stay there will be short-lived. Because anyone who has put in effort into creating an opportunity that is attractive is looking for people who will create more value and aid in making the pasture greener.

4. Be Bold.

Part of my roles in my previous job as a Human Resources Officer, was staff recruitment and during job interviews sessions, I would see how some people with great academic qualifications and good skills could undersell themselves at the interviews and as a result let job opportunities slip through their fingers.

Looking back at my career journey, I can also pinpoint several instances when I let great opportunities slip through my fingers because I was not bold enough and hence couldn’t demonstrate why I was worth being given access to greener pasture.

Believing in yourself is not an option when you want to succeed, it’s all there is. And this starts with your inner drive and many times it takes being bold to ready yourself for the greener pastures.
