Practising self-love this February

Practising self-love and self-care can seem selfish. Imagine in Swahili someone telling you “unajipenda!” translated as “you love yourself”—This doesn’t come out positive and many of us shy away from showing love and care to ourselves, but as Andre Gide said, “ Loving yourself isn’t vanity. It’s sanity”.

But what is self-care? (we know customer care, there’s self-care too). Self -care is defined as the practice of taking an active role in protecting one’s own well-being and happiness, in particular during periods of stress.

Self-love is not arrogance or selfishness. Self-love is not thinking too highly of yourself. Its is thinking of yourself as part of the others that deserve your love and attention. It is saying me too, not only me, to the exclusion of others.

Rather than letting the world to prescribe how we ought to feel and treat ourselves, self-care, positive encouragement, and self-love can help to improve your self-esteem and self-confidence and loving others.

Self-care would mean different things to different people. For you, it could be practising meditation or a personal devotion time, perhaps it’s making sure you have time every day to exercise or taking your dog for a walk, sitting by the river and looking at the water flow.
